GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what actually changes

Short answer: SEO earns your pages a position on a search results page. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) earn your business a mention inside an AI-written answer. GEO and AEO are two names for nearly the same job. All three share most of their inputs, so the practical change is not "stop doing SEO" but "add a few things SEO never asked for, and measure a different outcome."

The three terms, defined

  • SEO (search engine optimization): improving how pages rank in Google, Bing and other search engines. Success looks like positions, impressions and clicks.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): improving how often generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name and cite your business. The name comes from a 2023 research paper that tested which content changes made sources more likely to be cited in AI answers.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): optimizing content to be the direct answer a system returns, a term that predates large language models (featured snippets, voice assistants) and now mostly overlaps with GEO.

The glossary has short definitions of these and related terms.

What stays the same

Most AI assistants answer recommendation questions with retrieval: they search the web, read a few pages and write an answer grounded in them. So the classic SEO inputs still decide whether the engine can find you:

  • pages that rank for the questions buyers ask,
  • a site that crawlers can reach and load quickly,
  • links and mentions from sites the engines already trust,
  • structured data that states your facts in a machine-readable way.

If your SEO is weak, your GEO will usually be weak too, because the assistant never reads your pages in the first place.

What changes

SEO GEO / AEO
Unit of success A ranking page A mention or citation in an answer
Where the buyer decides On the results page, after clicking Inside the answer, often without clicking
How many winners Ten blue links, plus ads and maps Usually two to five names
What gets rewarded Relevance and authority of a page Clarity and corroboration of a business
How you measure Rank trackers, Search Console Repeated prompts across engines, sampled

Three practical differences follow.

1. Corroboration matters more. A model recommending your business is making a claim it cannot check in person, so it looks for agreement. Your name, address, services and service area need to read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp and the directories in your industry. SEO tolerated small inconsistencies. AI answers punish them.

2. Pages should answer first. Engines quote passages, not pages. A service page that opens with two plain sentences answering the buyer's question ("A water heater replacement in Tampa usually costs X to Y and takes half a day") is easier to cite than one that opens with a slogan.

3. Measurement needs sampling. A rank tracker checks one position. AI answers vary between runs, engines and phrasings, so a credible GEO measurement asks the same questions several times across several engines and aggregates. One screenshot is an anecdote. We wrote about this in when the score can't be trusted.

GEO vs AEO: is there a difference?

In 2026, barely. People who say AEO often come from featured-snippet and voice-search work and focus on question-and-answer formatting. People who say GEO often focus on large language models and citations. The tactics overlap almost entirely: clear entities, structured data, answer-shaped content, corroboration and measurement. Pick the term your team understands and do the work.

What to do this quarter

  1. Keep your SEO fundamentals: crawlable, fast pages that rank for buyer questions.
  2. Reconcile your listings so every profile matches your site exactly.
  3. Add or fix structured data. Our guide to schema markup for AI search lists the types that matter.
  4. Rewrite your top service pages to answer first.
  5. Measure the same buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini every month, next to your rankings.
