What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini name your business when someone asks a question you should be the answer to. It is measured by running real buyer prompts across engines, repeatedly, and counting how often you appear, where, and next to whom.

Why AI visibility is its own metric
Search rankings tell you where a page sits on a results list. AI visibility tells you whether your business makes it into a written answer. The two are related (assistants read ranking pages) but they are not the same: a firm can rank third on Google for a phrase and still be missing from the three names an assistant gives for the same question.
Buyers increasingly start with the assistant. When the answer is a short list, being absent means you were never considered, and nothing in your analytics shows the lead you lost. The why AI visibility matters page covers the shift in buying behavior.
How AI visibility is measured
A credible measurement has five parts. If a tool skips one, treat its number as directional.
- A prompt set built from your business. The questions your buyers actually ask, by service and by location, not a generic keyword list.
- Several engines. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini answer differently and cite different sources.
- Repeated sampling. The same prompt can return different names on different runs. Asking more than once and aggregating turns an anecdote into a measurement.
- Competitor and source capture. Who was named instead of you, in what position, and which pages the engine cited.
- Confidence labels. Thin samples marked as directional rather than dressed up as certain. Our post on when a score can’t be trusted explains why this matters.
The metrics you will see
- Mention rate: the share of answers that name you.
- Share of voice: your mentions as a share of all business mentions across the prompt set.
- Average position: where in the list you appear when you are named.
- Citation rate: how often the engine links to or cites your own pages.
- Blended score: a single number that combines answer visibility with the search and site signals that feed it. Frontpagely calls this the SeenRate: AI answers carry 50 percent, search signals 35 percent and site health 15 percent, and the methodology is public.
What a good AI visibility score looks like
There is no universal benchmark yet, because every market has a different number of credible competitors and a different set of questions. The useful comparisons are you versus the businesses named instead of you for the same prompts, and you this month versus you last month. A rising trend against a stable prompt set is the signal that matters.
How to improve AI visibility
The levers are the same seven inputs covered in the AI search optimization guide: entity clarity, structured data, consistent listings, answer-shaped pages, corroboration, crawl access and measurement. Start by measuring, because the gap list tells you which lever matters most for your market.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility in simple terms?
It is how often AI assistants recommend or mention your business when someone asks a relevant question, measured across engines and repeated over time.
Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO measures where your pages rank on a results page; AI visibility measures whether your business is named in an AI-written answer. Assistants read ranking pages, so strong SEO helps.
How do I check my AI visibility for free?
Run the free audit. It asks buyer questions about your market across the engines and shows whether you were named, who was named instead, and which sources were cited.
Which AI assistants should I track?
At minimum ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. They draw on different sources and often name different businesses for the same question.
