AI search optimization: how to get named in AI answers
AI search optimization is the work of making your business easy for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and name when a buyer asks for a recommendation. It rests on seven inputs you control: entity clarity, structured data, consistent listings, answer-shaped pages, third-party corroboration, crawl access, and measurement. This guide covers each one.

What AI search optimization is (and what it is not)
Classic SEO earns a position on a results page. AI search optimization earns a mention inside an answer. The answer is usually a short list of two to five names, there is no page two, and the buyer often acts on it without clicking anything.
The field goes by several names: generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLM SEO, LLM optimization. They describe the same job from slightly different angles, and the glossary defines each one. What it is not: a trick, a prompt hack, or a placement you can buy. Nobody outside the engine companies controls what a model says.
How the engines choose which businesses to name
Most consumer AI assistants now answer local and commercial questions with retrieval: they run a web search, read a handful of pages, and write an answer grounded in what they found. That means two things decide whether you appear.
- Can the engine find you? Your pages rank for the searches the assistant runs, your listings exist on the directories it reads, and your site lets its crawlers in.
- Can the engine trust you? Your name, address, phone, services and service area agree everywhere it looks, and independent sources (reviews, press, directories, associations) say the same things your site says.
A model is making a factual claim when it recommends you. It prefers businesses it can corroborate. Our post on what AI assistants cite for local businesses shows the source families that come up most.
The seven inputs you control
- 1. Entity clarity. One business name, one primary category, one clear description of who you serve and where. Say it the same way on your homepage, your About page and every profile.
- 2. Structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness schema (or your sector type, such as LegalService or Dentist) with name, address, phone, hours, service area and sameAs links. See schema markup for AI search.
- 3. Consistent listings. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and the directories your industry relies on, claimed and matching your site.
- 4. Answer-shaped pages. A page per service and per question buyers ask, opening with a direct two-sentence answer, then the detail. Engines quote pages that answer cleanly.
- 5. Corroboration. Reviews, local press, association listings and partner pages that mention you in your own words. These are the sources engines lean on to confirm what you say about yourself.
- 6. Crawl access. A robots.txt that does not block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot or Googlebot, fast pages, and an optional llms.txt summary of your key pages.
- 7. Measurement. The prompts your buyers ask, run across engines on a schedule, so you can see whether the work changes the answer. One screenshot is an anecdote; a sampled trend is evidence.
Where SEO still fits
AI search optimization does not replace SEO; it sits on top of it. Retrieval-backed assistants search the web before they answer, so pages that rank and earn links are the pages they read. That is why Frontpagely blends AI answers with your search standing and site health into one SeenRate instead of scoring AI mentions alone. The GEO vs SEO post covers the overlap in detail.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1: measure. Write down the ten questions a buyer asks before hiring you. Run a free audit to see who the engines name today and which sources they cite.
- Week 2: fix the entity. Claim and reconcile your main listings, then add or correct your structured data so it matches them exactly.
- Week 3: publish answers. Write or rewrite one page per core service, each opening with a direct answer to the question a buyer would ask an assistant.
- Week 4: corroborate and re-measure. Ask recent clients for reviews, fix any directory that still disagrees, then re-run the same prompts and compare.
Expect movement to take weeks, not days. Engines re-crawl on their own schedule and answers vary run to run, which is why the trend matters more than any single reading.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization the same as GEO?
In practice, yes. Generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and LLM SEO all describe the work of getting a business named and cited in AI-generated answers. The glossary explains the small differences in emphasis.
How long does AI search optimization take to show results?
Plan on several weeks. Engines re-crawl sites and listings on their own schedules, and answers vary between runs, so a change usually shows up as a trend across repeated measurements rather than overnight.
Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No. AI answers are probabilistic and change with model updates. What you can do is improve the inputs the engines read and measure the result over time.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional and cheap. An llms.txt file gives AI tools a short, curated map of your key pages. It will not fix weak content or inconsistent listings, but it does no harm. See what is llms.txt for the format and a copy-ready example.
