How to track traffic from ChatGPT and AI
Short answer: In Google Analytics 4, AI assistants show up as referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. A custom channel group or an exploration filtered on those sources gives you an "AI assistants" line. That number only counts clicks, though. Most AI answers are read without a click, so pair it with a measurement of how often the assistants name you.
Step 1: find AI referrals in GA4
- Open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
- Change the primary dimension to Session source.
- Search for
chatgpt,perplexity,gemini,claudeandcopilot.
You will usually see sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links it shows, which makes those visits easier to attribute.
Step 2: make it a channel
Add a custom channel group so AI traffic stops hiding inside "Referral":
- Admin > Data display > Channel groups > Create new channel group.
- Add a channel named AI assistants with the condition Session source matches regex:
chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini\.google|bard\.google|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft|edgeservices
- Move it above Referral so it matches first, then save.
Now every acquisition report can show AI assistants as their own line, with conversions attached.
Step 3: look at landing pages
Filter the Landing page report to the AI assistants channel. The pages that receive AI clicks are the pages the engines cite. They are worth keeping current, and they hint at which questions you already win.
What this number misses
Referral traffic is the visible tip. Three things stay hidden:
- Zero-click answers. A buyer reads "call Smith Law or Rivera Law" and phones you directly. Analytics records nothing, or a direct visit later.
- Missing referrers. Some apps and privacy settings strip the referrer, so the visit lands as direct.
- Answers that named someone else. The most important number, how often you were not recommended, never shows up in your analytics at all.
That is why AI visibility needs its own measurement: run the questions your buyers ask across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, repeatedly, and record who is named and which sources are cited. The what is AI visibility guide explains the metrics, and the free audit gives you a first reading in about a minute.
A simple monthly routine
- Check the AI assistants channel in GA4: sessions, landing pages, conversions.
- Check your AI visibility for the same month: mention rate, share of voice, citations.
- Compare the two. Rising visibility with flat clicks is normal; it usually means more zero-click recommendations. Falling visibility is the early warning.
